Caroline Starts Main-streeting in the Market

I was disappointed to learn on Friday afternoon that Karma Wear in the Market was forced to close earlier this year, joining many local business owners who were affected first by a transit strike, then by the recent recession.

So we set out on a mini-tour of the market, talking to local businesses about the recent economic climate.

I was drawn by the bright wooden blocks displayed in the front window into Nest, a children's toy store and all-around cozy haven. Focusing on colorful, baby-safe wooden toys from Germany, this store is a prime example of the vitality a small, local shop brings to the surrounding community.

Since she recently moved back to Canada from Germany, the owner Lisa shared with me her secret to surviving winters in Ottawa: long underwear! She hopes to add this item to the colourful list of cozy products she offers.

Small businesses are key to the Green economy. They provide local jobs and re-energize communities. Let's work together to support them!
